Andrea Wolper
Although vocalist, composer, and arranger ANDREA WOLPER started her professional career singing jazz standards, her eclectic tastes and multidisciplinary talents have led her to forge her own path. Her newest recording, WANDERLUST, is an apt title for her peregrinations down the byways of improvisatory vocal jazz.
Working frequently as both leader and side-person, Andrea is "an audacious artist [who] flouts genre limitations, singing songs for the love of it and delivering an inventive, thrilling, appealing musical vision.” One of the singers covered in The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide (Yanow, Backbeat Books), she is “a superb singer” who “brings songs to life, whatever their source,” and “a terrific arranger, taking new paths rather than expected ones.” Cadence Magazine calls her songwriting "easily superior.”
Wanderlust (Moonflower Music) is Wolper’s fourth album as a leader, following Parallel Lives (Jazzed Media, 2011), The Small Hours (VarisOne.Jazz 2005), and her self-titled debut, Andrea Wolper (1998). A mainstay of the New York jazz scene, she has appeared in top clubs including the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Mezzrow, the 55 Bar, Zinc Bar, and innumerable others. She tours in the U.S. and abroad, has been awarded a number of composing residencies, and records and performs for other artists across jazz genres, from holding a vocal chair with the straight ahead Heavenly Big Band to appearing in several performance and recording projects of free jazz bassist William Parker. She was a founding member of the improvising trio, TranceFormation, with Connie Crothers and Ken Filiano.
Andrea is a past President of International Women in Jazz, and served on the Advisory Board of the Jazz Vocal Coalition. She created and curated the "Why Not Experiment?" series at Whynot Jazz Room in New York City.
Andrea offers singing lessons in her private studio, conducts clinics in jazz vocal performance, and teaches classes on songwriting and improvisation.
Fun Facts: Andrea is an accomplished writer whose journalism and poetry have appeared in numerous publications. Among her works are two books, "Women's Rights, Human Rights: International Feminist Perspectives" (with Julie S. Peters; Routledge) and "The Actor's City Sourcebook" (Watson-Guptill). In addition, she's spent time on the stage, and came to New York from her native California to attend the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. She earned a black belt in Shotokan Karate, and has two dust-gathering trophies to tell the tale. She even has an IMDB listing.

Andrea Wolper is an active jazz singer, composer, and educator but this album is her first recording since 2011. On it, she reestablishes herself as a creative vocalist and arranger who can excel in many different styles. She also benefits from the support of excellent musicians such as reed player Jeff Lederer and violinist Charles Burnham. Wolper performs several of her own compositions as well as tunes by others such as Abbey Lincoln and Carole King. Among her ...

Itinerant creatives manifest in both literal and figurative terms. Yes, they most clearly present in true formal fashion, traveling from place to place, sharing their art wherever they may roam. But their venturesome virtues extend to the interior, too. In fact, what's often of the greatest importance and interest is the roving surrounding and propelling their work--exploration of narrow paths, walks through obscured alleys and hideaways, and time spent in secret sanctums that offer peace and space to think in ...

If multi-instrumentalist/composer William Parker's ten-CD Migration Of Silence Into And Out Of The Tone World suggests a cohesive, high concept plan, it is something more. The beautifully packaged clamshell box set is comprised of mutually exclusive projectsone dating back ten yearswith some common themes. There is an overall dedication of the music to all people of the world who are searching for freedom...." Pandemic downtime resulted in Parker's accumulating enough material for many of these albums. L'attività musicale di William Parker è stata copiosamente documentata da circa centocinquanta dischi, che spaziano in un caleidocopio di gruppi fondati dallo stesso contrabbassista, formazioni cooperative, omaggi, collaborazioni. Ma nessun singolo lavoro, fino a questo momento, aveva focalizzato l'attenzione su un ventaglio di ispirazioni così ampio e completo come si fa ora nei dieci CD del cofanetto The Music of William ParkerMigration of Silence Into and Out of The Tone World. In questo lavoro monumentale, che viene ...

by Jerome Wilson
On this release, pianist Bob Gluck mixes the realms of classical music and jazz in interesting ways. The formal, declarative music produced by Gluck, clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and vocalist Andrea Wolper is given flow and earthiness by the rhythmic pull of bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Tani Tabbal. The front-line combination fluidly rises and falls through pieces like the sparkling A Time of Singing," with Wolper singing words from the Bible's Song of Songs over surging piano, and ...

Composer/pianist/electronic artist Bob Gluck's musical repertoire is particularly diverse. Among his many electro-acoustic projects are the borderless duo album Textures and Pulsations (Ictus Records, 2012) with Aruán Ortiz, Tropelets (Ictus Records, 2014) featuring improvisations based on Jewish biblical chants, and Infinite Spirit (FMR Records, 2016) where he pays tribute to Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi Band. In the latter, Gluck brought in drummer Billy Hart and trumpeter Eddie Henderson from that relatively short-lived group. For Early Morning Star Gluck has brought together ...

Andrea Wolper isn't just a jazz singer. Hearing her mid-song monologue with bass accompaniment, during her own The Girls In Their Dresses," makes it clear that she's actually an actress choosing to communicate through the medium of jazz, and an utterly original one at that. On Parallel Lives, Wolper explores the music of Joni Mitchell, Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rodgers, and Duncan Sheik, to name just a few, and she brings a dramatic flair to the work of each and every ...

TranceFormation, the improvising trio of Connie Crothers (piano), Ken Filiano (bass), and Andrea Wolper (voice), subverts expectation on several counts. From the first moment, this seemingly traditional bass-vocal-piano formation leaves tradition behind: there are no assumed or assigned roles, no leader, no side players. Instead, three strongly individual voices" join to make music cooperatively as they weave in, out, and among one another, extending, bending, and experimenting with the sonic capabilities of their respective instruments. The music and words are ...

"Vocalist and composer Andrea Wolper delivers a mix of original material and covers on her new album [Wanderlust], opening it with a seriously cool take on Ray Charles’ 'Light Out Of Darkness.' I love the way it kind of sneaks up on us at the beginning, building before her sexy vocals come in. And then, watch out, because she will own you before long. The band helps cast her spell over everyone who listens. John Di Martino is on piano, Ken Filiano is on bass, Michael TA Thompson is on drums, Charlie Burnham is on violin, and Jeff Lederer plays both clarinet and flute on this album...What a gorgeous vocal performance."
Michael Doherty, Michael Doherty's Music Log
"This album [Parallel Lives] smartly illustrates the vastness of talent lying within . . . [she's] more than a competent singer set to standards and jazz traditions. She is an audacious artist, one unafraid of making mistakes in the heart of discovery. . . She flouts genre limitations, singing songs for the love of it and delivering an inventive, thrilling, appealing musical vision." — Jordan Richardson, Blogcritics
"Refusing, in utterly refreshing ways, to follow each song's furrowed emotional path, she instead opens them up for wider examination, demonstrating that for each yin there is a yang. . . . the album's finest evocation of dichotomous sentiments is Wolper's own The Girls in Their Dresses, where the arrogance of youthful infallibility crashes against the reality of fear, dissillusonment and underachievement. . . " [Parallel Lives] —Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
". . . what a delivery! Wolper sounds as if she's singing just for you . . . she's come up with one of the strongest and most interesting vocal efforts of the year." [The Small Hours] —Dan McClenaghan, AllAboutJazz.com
"Easily superior to the ever expanding population in the singer/songwriter category. ... Not Sleeping in Your Arms' is quite striking. It's [a] Wolper original, one that succeeds on the strength of its ambiguously constrained sexuality ("It was lovely not sleeping in your arms"), suggesting, perhaps, a lack of constraint to come. Strong contributions from both Affif and Filiano on the track." —Alan Bargebuhr, Cadence

Credentials/Background
Private Lessons I offer individualized instruction tailored to the specific needs of each student. No one-size-fits-all lessons here; exercises are selected based on what you need, in the moment, to develop your voice, your individual sound, healthy technique, and the very joy of singing. My teaching is based on the principals of Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri method (with Level III certification), an integrative method of vocal training based on function and physiology (in other words, there's no mumbo jumbo: my teaching is based on how the vocal mechanism actually works, and what's healthy). When appropriate, lessons include basic musicianship skills like ear-training and rhythm training, and methods for developing ease, relaxation, and freer vocal expression. I have experience working with adults and children, and beginners are warmly welcomed and encouraged. It's important that you find not only a skilled teacher, but one you feel comfortable with. Please email with any questions you may have, and feel free to schedule a first lesson without any obligation to continue. Coaching helps you develop your performance and interpretive abilities, and can also include focus on repertoire, finding keys, arrangements, leading a band, etc. My approach is always supportive, encouraging, and non-judgmental. Singing is a joyful act! www.andreawolper.com/teaching
