Dana Lauren
Music has always been a major part of Dana's life. Playing classical piano since the age of 6 and studying classical voice since the age of 13, she has gained a respect and understanding for all different types of music. Having a mother who loved jazz her whole life, Dana has been heavily influenced by jazz since she was young. At the age of 13 she began to take jazz piano lessons which furthered knowledge of the technical aspects of jazz. Dana has also studied at the Litchfield Jazz Festival Summer Institute where she had the opportunity to work with great teachers who helped her explore her style, as well as meeting great artists who have had a major impact on her career. As well as vocalists, instrumentalists have had a huge impact on her vocal style, making it pure and original yet true to the style of jazz. This year Dana was recognized by the NFAA Talent Search, placing in the top 10 percent nationally. At the 2006 Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival Dana was awarded Judge's Choice for piano and vocal within her group. She also received the overall Outstanding Vocalist award. She will be attending the New England Conservatory of Music to pursue a degree in jazz performance.

Vocalist Dana Lauren has a beautifully balanced alto voice that is pliant and malleable, one well suited for jazz. It's You or No One (Self Produced, 2010) was the singer's well-received debut, a smart collection of standards rendered well by top-notch musicians. Lauren sings inside and outside the box, straight-ahead and sideways with equal intensity and sensitivity. She is also effective in small spaces. In a minimalist trend that echoes Lawrence Lebo's less-is-more" approach, Lauren retires her ...

What does it take for someone who has been singing since she was a toddler--and had her sights set singing as a vocation since in elementary school--to make a strong go of it? Great focus and a strong will would be necessary traits. Willingness to learn and a thick skin would also be valuable, particularly in the jazz genre, in which emotional depth and artistic truth go hand-in-hand with the sheer technique needed to pull off successful performances. ...

At the age of 21, vocalist Dana Lauren has a command of her instrument that many professional singers twice her age would envy. Lauren has a voice that's one part Roberta Gambarini and one part Diana Krall, with a dash of soul thrown in to spice things up, and she puts it good use on this ten song program. Her debut album--Stairway To The Stars (Dana Lauren, 2008)--produced by and featuring trumpeter Arturo Sandoval--covered oft-performed standards like How High The ...
