Eric Revis
One of the most talented and accomplished musicians of his generation, Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer Eric Revis has firmly established himself as an important voice in jazz. Branford Marsalis states, “Eric’s sound is the sound of doom; big, thick, percussive.” Scores of musicians across various disciplines agree. Revis has performed and recorded with Betty Carter, Peter Brötzmann, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Steve Coleman, Ralph Peterson, Lionel Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Andrew Cyrille, and Tarbaby, the experimental trio he tri-leads with Orrin Evans and Nasheet Waits, as well as another trio, Options, also with Waits, and Bennie Maupin.
Manning the bass chair with Branford Marsalis’s powerfully flexible quartet since 1997, Revis has recorded eight albums with the ensemble in addition to touring the globe with them many times over. Revis has also recorded eight brilliant albums as a leader including 2004’s Tales of the Stuttering Mime and 2009’s Laughter’s Necklace of Tears both of which reveal his impressive range as a musician and composer. These were followed by five back-to-back releases on the Lisbon-based label Clean Feed: Parallax (2012 with Ken Vandermark, Jason Moran, and Nasheet Waits), City of Asylum (2013 with Kris Davis and Andrew Cyrille), In Memory of Things Yet Seen (2014 with Bill McHenry, Darius Jones, and Chad Taylor), Crowded Solitudes (2016 with Kris Davis and Gerald Cleaver), Sing Me Some Cry (2017 with Ken Vandermark, Kris Davis, and Chad Taylor). 2020 will see the release of a quintet recording led by Revis and bringing together frequent collaborators Bill McHenry, Darius Jones, Kris Davis, and Chad Taylor to be released on Ms. Davis’s Pyroclastic Records.
Regular festival and club appearances in Europe and North America with his own ensembles include an appearance at the 2016 Newport Jazz Festival where Revis was commissioned by George Wein to write a new piece for his last year as producer of the legendary festival. Revis has also been heard with the late, great trumpeter Tomasz Stańko and in innovative duo settings with pianists Davis and Orrin Evans. He has been a mentor to the next generation as part of the Kennedy Center’s “Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead”. Currently based in his native California, Revis is a frequent figure on the burgeoning creative music scene in Los Angeles at venues such as the Blue Whale and the Parker Room, including with his newly formed ensemble “Lancaster” featuring Jeff Parker, Guillermo Brown and Joshua White.

John Escreet: The Epicenter Of Your Dreams
by Vincenzo Roggero

Caleb Wheeler Curtis is one of the more daring musicians in jazz today, not only in his approach to playing the saxophone, but in his fearless dedication to his own musical conceptions, expressed clearly in his original compositions. That daring and dedication can be equally attributed to many of the shakers and movers of modern jazz, including one Thelonious Sphere Monk. On his double album release, The True Story of Bears and the Invention of the Battery (Imani, 2024), Curtis ...

There has always been room in jazz for those creative minds who can bridge the gap between the heart of tradition and the leading edge of change. In the world of saxophonists, Thomas Chapin, Arthur Blythe, Julius Hemphill or David Murray easily come to mind. Multi-instrumentalist Caleb Wheeler Curtis has similarly explored this terrain for years, and like his forebears, he often does his best work in a trio format. His August in March (Imani Records, 2023) was an imaginative ...

There is that image from one of Sergio Leone's spaghetti Western films where three gunfighters stand in the dusty town center, guns drawn, waiting for someone to flinch. That depiction of the Old West is somewhat appropriate as the UK-born pianist, John Escreet, who was based in New York for nearly a decade, moved to Los Angeles. He traded his NY trio of John Hébert and Tyshawn Sorey for the L.A. gunfighters bassist Eric Revis and drummer Damion Reid. The ...

by Vic Albani

by Geno Thackara
The art of the jazz diva does not shy away from the dark and mysterious. From putting a spell on somebody to helplessly falling under that old black magic, the tradition always seems to include some small touch of witchery, and Michelle Lordi, for her part, does not let a modern-day sound obscure those roots. The mood of Two Moons sits somewhere between a late-night set in a small jazz club and a round of spooky stories around the campfire. ...

by Chris May
Kurt Rosenwinkel records in a variety of situations, either from inclination or to keep himself and his audience fresh or both. In 2022 alone, he released three unusually diverse albums: Plays Piano, a solo outing on which he plays piano only; The Chopin Project, a co-led disc with pianist Jean-Paul Brodbeck exploring the work of Frederic Chopin; and Berlin Baritone, another solo album, this time playing a baritone guitar. Undercover: Live At The Village Vanguard is back ...

“Voted the Best Debut Disc in 2004” —All About Jazz
“Eric stretches the jazz fabric without ripping it apart. The results are a greatly varied….thoroughly rewarding and entertaining set.” —Jazz Times
“Mr. Revis... along with the drummer Jeff Watts, gives that group its tight, smacking sound. His vision of jazz begins with a strong rhythm section, and he has used Mr. Watts as the drummer on his own first album. But he is also one of jazz's relativists, interested in importing other sounds and forms and rhythms, and to this end he uses a dozen extra guests outside of his group in his original music.” —New York Times
