Gemma Sherry
Since moving to the U.S. eight years ago to study music in NYC, this soul-jazz singer, songwriter & saxophonist has released a number of house music records on various European record labels and has now released 4 studio albums.
Her debut album was "Songs I Love" which she recorded in England with the exquisite pianist Billy Woodman. This was followed by the released of her short play EP "Sings Bossa Nova" which got her a following in Brazil.
After running a widely successful kickstarter campaign during the pandemic in 2020, she released the upbeat cheeky album "Let's Get Serious" which she recorded in Philadelphia, USA. For this album she gathered some of the best NY session musicians such as Paul Bollenbeck on Guitar, George Coleman Jnr on Drums, Eric Wheeler on Double Bass and Rick Germanson on Piano.
There is no stopping this Aussie and certainly not during a pandemic. Keep an eye out for upcoming live performances.

Gemma Sherry: Music To Dream To
by Jack Bowers
Vocalist Gemma Sherry's fourth album, Music to Dream To, recorded in July 2020, closely follows her third, Let's Get Serious, released less than a year earlier. This latest album expresses Sherry's love for the music of South America in general and Brazilian bossa nova in particular, with half a dozen engaging songs that sway to an irresistible bossa (or samba) beat. Two numbers"The Telephone Song" and Keep Talking"are repeated ("acoustic version," the track listing points out), and even counting the ...

A perfect response to challenge and change. In the parlance of the agrarian American South, Gemma Sherry is makin' hay while the sun shines. Let's Get Serious is the singer's light-as-air, coquettishly coy wink at the COVID-19 pandemica wink as opposed to any other response, as Sherry is a true Lady. The title of her third full-length (in 2020 alone) recording is deliciously ironic as the tone is anything but. Globally, this release is best defined in the ...

Gemma Sherry's Songs I Love (Tunley Records, 2020) is not yet a year old, and now she releases an extended-play collection of five tried and true Bossa Nova pieces, that like Songs I Love, did not require one more run-through, save for Sherry's exquisitely well-balanced voice and her rock solid accompaniment who supported the singer previously on Songs I Love. Sherry's treatment of these classic songs is breezy and light. She avoids a humid reading of these melodies, giving them ...

Are computer servers not clotted to the point of infarction with the detritus of recordings by everyone who thinks he or she is a jazz singer? But here is a recording that reminds us why a collection of old songs, performed true to the melody, is so important to American music and her sacred Songbook. Gemma Sherry's Songs I Love is such ...
