Harvie S
Any jazz fan will tell you Harvie S is one of the great bass players on the scene today. He's played with the best and he continues to challenge himself and his peers in new artistic directions. Moreover, Harvie is a producer, bandleader, composer and educator.
Harvie S has performed with masters in jazz music and masters in Latin music including Stan Getz, Pat Methany, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Gil Evans, Arturo O'Farrill, Lee Konitz, James Williams, James Moody, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Houston Person, Art Farmer, Toots Thielemans, Bob Mintzer, Joe Lovano, Dave Leibman, Vic Juris, Danilo Perez, Paquito D'Rivera, Ray Barretto, Ray Vega, David Valintin and countless others. He can be heard on several hundred CDs as a sideman, eight as a leader and another fifteen as a co-leader with such greats as James Brown, Chick Corea, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, Tom Harrell, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Kenny Barron, Ingrid Jensen, Pat Martino, Dr. Billy Taylor, Grover Washington Jr., David Mathews, Virginia Mayhew and Tony Bennett.
Over 100 Harvie S compositions have been recorded on CDs Records and Videos.
Harvie S arrived in New York in 1973 and a short time later co-led the now legendary Double Image Band that recorded for ECM and Enja Records and performed at major festivals throughout the world.
He also was a member of the Steve Kuhn Quartet which also recorded on ECM and featured many of his compositions.
After playing a short stint with Stan Getz in 1979 Harvie decided to make his first solo effort and sent a copy to Gramma-vision records. Soon a contract was signed and Harvie's first Solo release "Underneath it All" made it's debut. Two more releases followed "Urban Earth" and "Smart Moves". Urban Earth was on the Radio Charts for 2 months and hit 3 in the nation. It also charted on Billboard Jazz. Smart moves was #10 on the charts and received rave reviews.
Ever questing for new sounds and Harvie recorded "In a different Light". this project included Mike Stern, John Scofield, Mick Goodrick, Leni Stern and Leon Parker(his very first recording). Gary Giddins chose this CD as one of the best of 1990 in the village Voice.
Ever broadening his musical scope, Harvie started studying Afro-Cuban music twelve years ago and has been on the Latin-Jazz scene ever since. He combines both idioms in a bold new music with The Harvie S Band. The music is best described as Jazz on the Latin side combining the melodic and harmonic sophistication of jazz and the extraordinary rhythmic intensity of Latin music. The Harvie S Band has performed throughout the world. Their recent release, Funky Cha, has garnered rave reviews.

The Paul Carlon Quintet: Blues for Vita The Paul Carlon Quintet
by Nicholas F. Mondello
Blues for Vita provides listeners with an outstanding eight-selection presentation that is a modernized throwback to the days when tenor-trumpet quintets such as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Lee Morgan's, and Cannonball Adderley's ensembles were the mainstays of jazz labels such as Riverside, Columbia, and Blue Note. The album offers a well-produced mix of straight-ahead, boogaloo, and Latin-flavors from five terrific Paul Carlon originals, two Broadway musical grabs, and a Larry Willis tune made most famous by Woody Shaw ...

by Katchie Cartwright
A Kiss for Brazil is Kansas-bred Grammy-nominated singer Karrin Allyson's third release to feature Brazilian music (From Paris to Rio, Concord, 1999; Imagina, Concord, 2008), and her first to showcase Brazilian musicians: Vitor Gonçalves on piano and accordion, Rafael Barata at the drums, plus the acclaimed singer-guitarist and songwriter Rosa Passos. First-call New York-based guitarist Yotam Silberstein and bassist Harvie S complete the group. The album sprang into being spontaneously, in response to a concert Passos had scheduled in New ...

by Jack Bowers
Peter Hand has a hand in almost everything on Blue Topaz, playing masterful guitar, writing seven of the album's ten engaging numbers and arranging all of them. He also spliced together a pair of blue-chip ensembles for his first small-group recording after three well-received big-band albums, and invited his longtime friend--and legendary tenor saxophonist--Houston Person to sit in on two tracks. Person had also guested on one of the guitarist's big-band recordings, Out of Hand (2014). Hand's ...

With an academic background from the New England Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music and performance credits alongside Joe LaBarbera and Antonio Sanchez, Keefe brings a wealth of experience and education to this seven-track offering. The album begins with Keefe's original composition, Got a Chick?," ...

by Peter Rubie
Jam sessions are strange creatures. A friend recently told me a story about a session he went to in a private home where a visiting pianist had basically come loaded for bear and would not relinquish the piano chair until she was finally thrown off by the host so others could have a turn. I don't know about you," she apparently said somewhat haughtily as she left, but I'm here to PLAY." Which is interesting, because I've found ...

by Dan McClenaghan
Unearthing and releasing old music--even sounds sourced from decades old tapes--has become common in jazz. Pianist Bill Evans (thank you. Zev Feldman) has enjoyed something of a twenty-first-century renaissance. Pianist Fred Hersch released @ The Village Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2018), recorded in 1997; and 2021 saw the posthumous release from pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, Hanamichi (Red Hook), recorded in 2013. Pianist David Janeway has been on the scene since the late 70s; he offered up the marvelous Distant Voices ...

by Geannine Reid
Rhythm, the lifeblood of jazz performances, takes center stage in Michael Costantino's album, The Song Inside the Tune. The album explores the vast terrain of rhythmic structures, with the trio's expert navigation of the eighth note serving as the backbone of their groove. The exploration unfolds a multifaceted perspective on Costantino's rhythmic approach, and thus, his artistry. Setting the stage with Yesterdays," the trio--Costantino, bassist Harvie S, and drummer Thierry Arpino--paints an audioscape rich with modern rhythms. The ...

A central figure of jny: New York City’s jazz & Afro-Cuban scenes over the last five decades, flutist Andrea Brachfeld, like most artists over the last two years, found a great amount of time to reflect on their art, community and humanity. For Evolution, Brachfeld’s writing was affected by her dive into children’s issues and the ongoing need of basic necessities even in the best of times. The added pandemic led her to a wide-range of musical sources, each reflecting ...
