With a distinguished career spanning folk, jazz, and world music, award-winning singer songwriter Laura Baron has recently released her latest album, Beauty in the Broken, a stirring collection that sees her embracing her jazz roots in a new light.
Featuring eight original songs along with an inspired jazz-infused take on the classic song Dream a Little Dream," Baron’s latest work captures a journey of healing and transformation.
Known for her nuanced and rich vocals, Laura Baron fuses contempoary folk with rich jazz textures. Through Beauty in the Broken", Baron explores poignant themes of mental health, addiction, and isolation, yet she skillfully offers a sense of quiet optimism through each melody and lyric. The jazz influences shine through, with intricate instrumental arrangements and an interplay of genre, and the album unfolds with soulful guitar solos, Latin inflected rhythms, warm piano grooves and resonant flute melodies that recall her earlier days in jazz performance. Production by the celebrated Marco Delmar enhances the subtle jazz layers.
A conversation inspires the album's title track with a fellow musician and encapsulates the album’s message—finding beauty in life’s imperfections and healing through vulnerability:
“I want to share a deeper story behind the song, Beauty in the Broken, which is the title track of my new album. The first line came from a conversation with my friend and fellow musician, Dave, when he asked me, “What would it be like if you were on the outside looking in? What would you see?” His question stirred something in me, and I began to imagine: I see an empty room where someone is calling my name, trying to reach me. I feel despair, but I see a shattered jewel as I look closer. There’s beauty in there—beauty in the broken—as light streams through the cracks. This song is about the healing I experience when I let someone in—when I allow myself to be truly seen and feel their kindness and compassion. It’s a reminder that even in our most vulnerable moments, there is beauty—and light—waiting to be found.”
Beauty in the Broken balances weightier themes with uplifting, spirited moments, helping to balance the album as she charts a course through the highs and lows that inevitable define a life.
