Focus On Women in Jazz is a unique collection of black and white photos curated by photographer Guy Fonck, capturing over 500 concerts spanning several decades. While primary focused on Luxembourg’s vibrant jazz scene, featuring musicians from 40 countries, it also showcases iconic moments from La Grande Parade du Jazz in Nice, where American legends took the stage. From icons such as Carmen McRae, Dorothy Donegan and Melba Liston to contemporary jazz luminaries like Maria Schneider, Marilyn Mazur, or Melody Gardot, discover the legacy of women who have shaped jazz beyond borders.

About the author

Guy Fonck was born on January 28, 1961, in Luxembourg. He got his first camera, an Agfa Click, in 1968. In 1975, his photographs received their first recognition at various national and international photo exhibitions.

In 1977, he discovered jazz music and joined the Jazz Club Luxembourg. He began taking black-and-white photos at jazz concerts and festivals.

After 1986, Fonck became increasingly involved with the Jazz Club Luxembourg and so busy, he stopped photographing for almost a decade.

In 2003, Fonck rediscovered photography, inspired by a new Canon digital SLR camera and in 2007, he served as a member of the jury at the Eurodjango Eurojazz Awards. He was also the official photographer at the European awards ceremonies for the Eurodjango Eurojazz Awards that year.

October 2010 saw Fonck holding a private exhibition of 55 of his photographs at the cloister of the Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye Neumünster in Luxembourg-Grund. The following year, he was invited to contribute a photograph to JAZZ: The Smithsonian Anthology, published by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, alongside contributions from notable photographers such as Lee Tanner and the legendary Herman Leonard.
