Jesse Dietschi
The worlds of classical and jazz collide as Canadian bassist Jesse Dietschi presents works that defy genre. With credits ranging from orchestral soloist to jazz session player, Dietschi is equally fluent in both musical idioms as a bassist, composer, and bandleader. He has toured globally with artists and groups including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Nick Maclean Quartet, Tunnel Six, Abraxas, and Ken Lavigne, and is the Principal Bassist of the string orchestra Sinfonia Toronto. Dietschi performs frequently with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Canadian Opera Company as an extra section bassist, jazz bassist, and electric bassist, and has served as guest Principal Bassist with the Niagara Symphony. He will be releasing his debut recording as a bandleader, Gradient, in October 2023.
In 2023, he performed at Carnegie Hall, Toronto’s Massey Hall, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, and Chicago’s Symphony Centre as part of the Toronto Symphony’s international Centennial tour, as well as performing on their commercial recording of Messiaen’s Turangalîla- Symphonie. Originally from Winnipeg, Dietschi holds graduate degrees in Composition (Brandon University), Jazz Performance (University of Toronto), and Orchestral Performance (Glenn Gould School).
He has toured, performed, and recorded with such artists as Rich Underhill, Daniel Barnes, Brownman, Andrew Downing, Jeremy Ledbetter, Alexander Brown, rock icons The Headstones, Come From Away composer David Hein, and New York saxophonist Russ Nolan, to name a few. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals in both Canada and the US, and has recorded as a guest artist on numerous recordings. As an orchestral musician, Dietschi has performed with renowned conductors including Gustavo Gimeno, Peter Ounjian, Sir Andrew Davis, Gemma New, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and helped accompany such international soloists as James Ehnes, Augustin Hadelich, Yuja Wang, and Marc-André Hamelin.
