Joe Russo's Almost Dead Two-Night Run at the Fox Theater: A Celebration and a Tribute
ByThe first night was a high-energy celebration, with the band effortlessly weaving through intricate jams and electrifying renditions of both staples and deeper cuts. Their uncanny ability to push boundaries while remaining true to the spirit of the songs was on full display. Each member showcased their incredible musicianship, creating a collective energy that filled the historic venue.
The second night, however, was something entirely differenta deeply emotional experience. News of Phil Lesh's passing earlier that morning hung heavy in the air. As a founding member and the spiritual core of the Grateful Dead, Phil's influence on JRAD and the larger music world cannot be overstated. The band, visibly emotional throughout the evening, channeled their feelings into their performance, creating some of the most beautiful and heartfelt music of the weekend.
Particularly gut-wrenching were "Box of Rain," "I Shall Be Released," and "Not Fade Away." During "Box of Rain," the poignancy of the lyrics seemed to resonate deeply with the band, their emotions evident in every note. I Shall Be Released felt like a collective prayer, with the band pouring their souls into the song. The band concluded with "Not Fade Away" which became a cathartic anthem, the entire audience joining the band in a resounding chant to honor Phil and affirm that his spirit will live on through the music. The crowd reaffirmed the timeless connection between the band, the music, and the community it has created.
These two nights weren't just shows; they were a testament to the power of music to celebrate, grieve, and heal. JRAD honored Phil Lesh in the most fitting way possible: by wearing their hearts on their sleeves, playing their hearts out, and keeping the spirit of the music alive.
