Houston Person: Reminiscing at Rudy's
by Jack Bowers
The Rudy's" in the title of tenor saxophonist Houston Person's album, Reminiscing at Rudy's, is not a nightclub or other such venue but the New Jersey studio of celebrated recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder who died in 2016. As befits reminiscing, the bulk of the album's numbers are tender ballads, every one of which lands squarely in Person's amorous wheelhouse. That is not to say the veteran tenor saxophone maestrowho has recorded almost seventy albums as leader ...

Pianist Larry Fuller isn't exactly coy about the substance of this record. Exuberance is an obvious through-line as he works his way across a dozen charmers that frequently live up to the promise of the title in different ways. Leading an ace trio with Hassan Shakur on bass and Lewis Nash on drums, Fuller finds his way into this realm with a peppy and all-too-short take on Wes Montgomery's Fried Pies." Then he continues along the path paved ...

Larry Fuller Trio Jazz at Kitano New York, NY November 22, 2015 While jazz is a music founded and fed on innovation, it's also an art form steeped in tradition, forwarded through the passing of the torch to the next generation(s) in order to keep the life force of the music in good and capable hands. That fact was never as obvious as it was during Larry Fuller's appearance at Jazz at Kitano on ...

Bassist Ray Brown sure knew how to pick his pianists. While each player who manned the 88s in Brown's trio displayed a different personality, all had Swiss watch timing and shared an affinity for the blues and effulgent swing. It didn't take more than a few seconds to hear that when Gene Harris was on the bench, delivering church-y proclamations and earth-shaking tremolos, and it was equally noticeable when Benny Green put his hands to good use, displaying the Oscar ...

If I were a musician blessed with talent and the motivation required to fully develop it, then I would be faced with an infinite number of choices upon entering the recording studio. Able to play almost anything, what would I choose? Luckily, being in a group with Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton and Larry Fuller would simplify matters considerably. I would be required to play bebop and blues, and swing my butt off in the process.
Such a scenario is fun ...

A career in parentheses even at home in Manhattan.
A woman with a white lacquered hairdo and a black lacquered handbag was pursuing Larry Fuller through a crowded theater lobby after a recent show in New Hampshire. The gig was billed as an evening of cool jazz with John Pizzarelli, and Mr. Pizzarelli, the guitarist and singer, served as the main attraction, signing CDs for a line of fans.
But the lady in pursuit appeared more interested in the shy ...

"A word about Mr Fuller: In his amazing gossamer piano solos, he sprinkles stardust on whatever song he plays; you hold your breath in wonder." — New York Times
"Larry Fuller merits special attention. If you closed your eyes and concentrated on piano solos that flowed as lightly and sweetly as a mountain brook, you could swear he was channeling the musical spirit of one of Billie Holiday's greatest accompanists, Teddy Wilson." — New York Times
