Marc Ducret
Marc Ducret was born in Paris, France in 1957, and began his professional career as a self-taught musician in 1975, playing with dance bands, folklore groups and singers and doing a lot of studio work.
Interested in a very wide range of styles and instruments (acoustic and electric 12-string guitars, oud, fretless and baritone guitars), Ducret was a member of the first National Jazz Orchestra in France in 1986, and also led his own trio which gave many concerts and performed in numerous festivals in France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Africa, India, and Japan.
Ducret also performed with Larry Schneider, David Friedmann, Michel Portal, Joachim Kuhn, Franco Ambrosetti, Didier Lockwood, Eric Barret, Miroslav Vitous, Enrico Rava, Adam Nussbaum, Django Bates, David Sanborn, Joey Baron, Michel Godard and others.
Since 1991, his collaboration with saxophonist Tim Berne has made Ducret one of the few European musicians regularly playing overseas. Frequently invited to be a guest soloist by groups, composers and radio programs in Germany, he created his own tentet "Seven Songs," exploring the music of the '60s with a very personal touch, and plays regularly with Louis Sclavis and Dominique Pifarely's Acoustic Quartet.
He has also recently collaborated with the band AKA Moon and with percussionist Bobby Previte in duet and the quartet Latin for Travelers.

Sunny Five: Candid
by Glenn Astarita
With the ever-evolving tapestry of experimental jazz, striking the perfect balance between familiar echoes and trailblazing sounds can be a delicate act. Intakt's latest release, Sunny Five, not only navigates this tightrope with finesse but also performs a dazzling dance across it. This album serves as a vibrant reminder of the joy and spontaneity that lie at the heart of jazz. Delivered by a collection of renowned New York-based musicians, each a master in their own right, the band offers ...

by John Kelman
Plenty has been written about musical camaraderie--the building of long-term musical relationships and their unmistakable impact on the evolution of a group. Few, however, discuss the inevitable impact of personal relationships behind the music. Times have changed, and few jazz groups tour for more than a couple of consecutive weeks; still, hitting the road for even two weeks is sure to mean plenty of up close and personal" time amongst band members. Samuel Blaser's Boundless (hatOLOGY, 2011) was recorded during ...

by Mark Corroto
There is a through line working within Palm Sweat -Marc Ducret Plays the Music of Tim Berne. The guitarist covers compositions passed to him by composer and saxophonist Tim Berne as he was leaving Brooklyn for his home in France just as the Covid19 lockdowns were beginning. The connections between Ducret and Berne are quite obvious. The guitarist has toured and recorded in many Berne ensembles including Bloodcount, Caos Totale, Big Satan, Science Friction Band, and Snakeoil, plus Berne's label ...

by Ludovico Granvassu
As we continue our journey in today's French jazz scene, we look at how it has been influenced by the many musical traditions that enrich the French society, in particular those from North Africa and the Middle-East, courtesy of Yacine Boularès, Ibrahim Maalouf, Naïssam Jalal, Smadj and Sophie Alour with Mohamed Abozekry and Wassim Halal). To further widen the range of this episode, the urban influence of hip hop on jazz (Kit De Survie and Thiefs); the faux soundtracks of ...

by Vincenzo Roggero

Alto saxophonist Tim Berne has never met anything or anyone he doesn't instantly want to re-invent, invert, dismantle and polish into his own image. And no, it's not any kind of savior thing, messianic impulse or Dr. Stranglove fixation. He simply hears and sees things more offbeat, peculiar, and colorful, thank you very much. So too does any configuration of Snakeoil, Berne's wiry, spidery and like-minded core of engineers. As a league onto themselves, bass clarinetist Oscar Noriega, ...

Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
Guitarist Marc Ducret returns with his second volume of Tower (Ayler 119), a musical commentary on Vladimir Nabokov's novel Ada. I reviewed the first volume on my Gapplegate Guitar and Bass Site (www. gapplegateguitar.blogspot.com) several months ago. I review volume two here to ensure that the news of this project reaches the bulk of my readers. This time out, Marc's well conceived guitar abstractions are joined by the alto of Tim Berne, the violin of Dominique Pifarely, and the drums ...

All About Jazz
French guitarist Marc Ducret is best known for his collaborations with Tim Berne, but he already has close to a dozen own releases. French pianist Benoit Delbecq has played with numerous musicians, including Evan Parker, Franois Houle, with the French Kartet, recently with Poolplayers, and he has of course also released several own CDs. I think Ducret and Delbecq played only once together on a record and that is on Ducret's Qui Parle". This duo recording is a live performance ...
