Martin Fabricius

Martin Fabricius is a Danish vibraphonist and film composer. He graduated Suma Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music with a major in film scoring in 1996. While at Berklee, Martin studied the vibraphone with Ed Saindon and multi grammy award winner Gary Burton.

Building on the legacy of Gary Burton and his pianistic 4-mallet approach, Martin is considered a leading exponent of a new generation of vibraphone players, exploring the use of electronics, new repertoire and inventing new playing techniques in the quest of expanding the expressive possibilities of his instrument. Martin’s music has by many been described as calm, image invoking Nordic jazz. His trio albums has received international critical acclaim – including 5 of 5 star reviews in All About Jazz and JazzThetik and they have become one of the most played jazz bands on Danish National Radio. He has toured Europe, Asia, Africa and the U.S..

Martin Fabricius is also a sought after guest soloist and sideman and has played with legendary trumpet player Tomasz Stanko, Steve Swallow, Lew Soloff and Ornettes Colemans Prime Time bass player Jamaaladeen Tacuma.

Martin lives in Copenhagen Denmark where he teaches percussion, composition and film- scoring when not touring. In his spare time he enjoys nature and the practice of Taoist Tai Chi.

Back then, it was regarded primarily as a percussion instrument, and it is still categorized as tuned-percussion in the classical music world. Hampton was the first musician to give (almost) as much attention to harmony and melody as he did to rhythm when he was a featured soloist with the Benny ...

Martin Fabricius Trio: Out of the White

Read "Out of the White" reviewed by Budd Kopman

The opening sounds of the title track of Out of the White herald that this is going to be something different. Electronic sounds begin the track, but closer listening reveals that these are being made ingeniously by Martin Fabricius' vibes. Bassist Christian Hougaard enters, stating the theme supported by the quasi-electronic vibe sounds. Fabricius takes over to recap the theme now as a recognizable vibraphonist. At the turnaround, Mathias Heise adds his harmonica to the mix, eventually with drummer Jacob ...
