Trevor Spiro

Trevor is a retired British drummer living in Brazil.

About Me

I became very interested in jazz whilst at university in London 1973-76. Although I studied aerospace engineering, my thesis was on quadraphonic sound, which took me into the hi-fi industry, particularly British high end (Linn, Naim, Meridian). I started drumming at the age of one and received tuition at age eight from the same tutor who taught Phil Collins. Fusion jazz captured my soul and now retired and living in Brazil, I contribute to various jazz and drum forums especially concerning this genre. My favourite album is Caravanserai by Santana, deep and spiritual. I’m friends with drummer Gerry Brown (Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Stanley Clarke) and Patrick Gleeson (former owner of Different Fur studios, creative player on and producer of Herbie Hancock’s Sextant and Headhunters albums). My interests are photography, drums, and early synthesisers (Buchla, Tonto, etc).

My Jazz Story

I love Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Erik Truffaut and so many others. I met 100 year old Marshall Allen of The Sun Ra Arkestra - what an incredible player (at any age). The best show I ever attended was Al Di Meola at Ronnie Scott’s in London. The first jazz record I bought was Stories To Tell by Flora Purim. I especially love bossa nova and fusion. I speak English, Portuguese, and French. I am a drummer of 68 years experience - my tutor was Frank King who also taught Phil Collins.
