The Label Head: Nils Winther

Read "The Label Head: Nils Winther" reviewed by B.D. Lenz

Talk to anyone from around the jazz business and they'll all tell you the same thing, there is no shortage of it. There is plenty of great music being made by plenty of great musicians. In fact, the supply is probably outpacing the demand. And yet independent jazz labels are having a tough time. Do they ...

Can we finally retire the assertion that we are living in a Golden Age of the jazz piano trio? It seems like every month brings trio dates of such imagination and accomplishment as to render superlatives beside the point. These three recordings released in an eight-week period in Spring 2023 are a reminder that one of ...

Mary Lou Williams: Into the Zone of Music

Read "Mary Lou Williams: Into the Zone of Music" reviewed by Jakob Baekgaard

Few musicians have embraced the entire history of jazz like Mary Lou Williams, and at the same time shaped its development compositionally and instrumentally. She brought jazz into contact with classical music and played spiritual jazz before it became hip, but she was also a treasured teacher and mentor. Mary Lou Williams was born ...

From George Coleman to Meeco: Ten Overlooked Classics

Read "From George Coleman to Meeco: Ten Overlooked Classics" reviewed by Chris May

The only thread running through this installment of Building A Jazz Library is that of unsung quality. No particular artist is spotlighted, nor any particular genre. There are simply ten, randomly selected albums, recorded in the US and Europe between 1953 and 2021, which show jazz off at its finest, but which, for one reason or ...

Mac Gollehon: The End is the Beginning

Read "The End is the Beginning" reviewed by John Pietaro

From the opening moments of “As Your World Burns," Mac Gollehon's music embraces not simply the underground, but the underside. This collection of fleeting, gripping brass and dense atmosphere amounts to the lost score for the '70s-'80s noir film we've longed for, as nasty in its perfection as was the Manhattan of those years. Gollehon's trumpet ...
