Musician

Lisa Hilton

Born:

Laced with a pulsating West Coast cool energy, the award-winning composer and acclaimed pianist Lisa K. Hiltons’, recordings are imbued with subtle historical references from a wide variety of genres and eras, sounding distinctly twenty-first century and uniquely of her own style. Her compositional inspirations do spring from jazz legends Thelonious Monk, Count Basie, Horace Silver and Duke Ellington, but they also include her favorite bluesmen, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, touches of minimalism from the likes Steve Reich, rhythmic swatches from modernists such as Prokofiev and Bartok or chords from rockers like The Black Keys or Green Day – they all hold sway in Hilton’s imagination when she composes.

Originally from a small town on California’s central coast, Hilton studied classical and twentieth-century piano formally from the age of eight, where she was inspired by her great uncle, Willem Bloemendall, (1910-1937), a Dutch piano virtuoso

It has been, to say the least, one hell of fright night year. But here is the music that stayed with me, through thick and thin, and all manner of human foible and political upheaval. Vijay IyerCompassion ECM Records Kris Davis

And Some Blues...

Featuring the music of Lisa Hilton
Duration: 6:24

"And Some Blues…" is one of my favorites tunes on our album LUCKY ALL ALONG.

Originally the blues were considered the basis, or the soul of jazz, but today many jazz artists don’t include any in their performances at all. As a composer, and a pianist, I ALWAYS want to include the blues though! I really love what the band contributed on this - Luques Curtis on bass sounds so cool on the intro! Igmar Thomas on trumpet really kicks in about halfway through on the bridge - I just love that part! Rudy Royston on drums is just feeding us all the best grooves too. I know a lot of people don't think about the sound too much, but the recording is stellar - the piano, trumpet - everyone sounds really good sound wise don't you think?

Near the end we wind up with a slow blues after the fireworks. It is always exciting working with our band on new music and I'm really happy how "And Some Blues..." turned out. It is hard though to shoot a video while you are actually recording the tune, because you are really focused on playing and listening rather than looking at the camera, but I think director Ricky Chavez did a really good job on showing musicians hard at work creating all new music. We hope you like it too!

Lisa Hilton: Lucky All Along

Read "Lucky All Along" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Throughout the course of her quietly triumphant, just south-of-the-spotlight, virtuoso career, pianist/composer Lisa Hilton has never actively pursued, Captain Ahab-like, the biggest fish in the sea. She has played alongside many of the biggies--Christian McBride,  Antonio Sanchez, Nasheet Waits, Sean Jones, JD Allen--but finds the greatest comfort, harmony, and camaraderie among her long-standing rhythm mates: bassist Luques Curtis, drummer ...
