Oreglo: Opedge

Read "Oreglo: Opedge" reviewed by Scott Lichtman

This writer was persuaded to switch from trumpet to tuba in high school and, ever since has been looking for a modern, hard-grooving quartet underpinned by tuba on which to hang his fanboy hat. The moment has arrived: the band is oreglo and the song featured here is “opedge." Guitarist Linus Barry, drummer Nicco Rocco, keyboardist ...

Oreglo

Active since:

Many have tried to define London through music, but few encapsulate the sound of the capital today as eloquently as oreglo – a rising, genre-defying four-piece made up of c-sé (keys), Linus Barry (guitar), Nicco Rocco (drums) and Teigan Hastings (tuba). Through their debut EP ‘Not Real People’ they introduce themselves as a boundless musical experiment endlessly indebted to the city they call home.

After meeting in Secondary school and Tomorrow’s Warriors youth club, oreglo began carving out their expansive sonic palette, endeavouring to push the boundaries of the jazz scenes that birthed them. Through their music, their upbringings in different corners of the capital collide – from DIY jam sessions in East London to the reggae that bleeds from shop speakers into Brixton market, and the grime and drill ricocheting from their peers’ earphones.

Vibration Black Finger

Lascelle "Lascelles" Gordon -- the driving force behind Vibration Black Finger -- astonishes yet again with a magnificent second album. Once more his inspiration is drawn from the obscure spiritual jazz collectives of the 1970s where he employs a vast array of like-minded collaborators to create a listening experience infused with an ever-present undercurrent of personal expression and cultural empowerment that's as enriched with ideas as it is progressive in its form. Having earned his chops as founding member of the Brand New Heavies, Campag Velocet, and Heliocentric World, Lascelle's latest album Can You See What I'm Trying to Say bursts with energy and vivid contrasts, flowing effortlessly between beat-laden grooves, oscillating improvisations, soulful recitations, audio verité, and moody atmospherics

Raw Odoni

Raw Odoni are a modern jazz quartet from South London formed in 2023. We are Hu Spall (ten / sop), Matthew Shorter (piano), Dan Richards (bass) & Christian Lewcock (drums).

The band’s influences are far and wide. We’re loosely post-bop, and have common ground on Coltrane, Monk and Miles. But we listen to everything, from John Cage to The Necks via Fela Kuti and Gong, and a lot of it finds its way in. We’re just vibing off playing together, writing and seeing where it takes us.
