Will Young

Multi-award-winning British pop star and actor Will Young returns with his ninth studio album, Light It Up, a shimmering blend of 70s and 80s soulful pop with a modern twist, out now via BMG. Featuring the euphoric lead single Falling Deep and the heartfelt ballad The Worst, the album marks Will’s first collection of originals in five years.

Light It Up is a testament to Will’s magnetic vocals and storytelling prowess, blending confessional lyrics with infectious melodies. From dancefloor-ready tracks like Talk About It and Feels Just Like A Win to introspective moments such as The Worst and the anthemic title track Light It Up, the album explores the joys and complexities of life in your 40s.

Will’s illustrious career includes two BRIT Awards, an Ivor Novello, and an Olivier nomination for Cabaret. He has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, with all eight of his previous albums hitting the UK Top 3, including four at No.1.

Celebrate the new album with Will’s sold-out Light It Up Live 2024 Tour, an intimate evening of acoustic performances, stories, and conversation.

"I hope this album is the go-to for a dance, a cry, and a celebration," says Will. "Crafting pop music is so fun, and the challenge of singing these songs is something I’ve relished."

Duke Ellington at 125 Years Young

April 29 marked the 125th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth in 1899. Catching the Ellington bug over the weekend, I figured what better way to kick off the week than with seven celebratory video clips and a bonus album: Here's Ellington conducting the Dick Cavett band on August 8, 1969. Bill Kirchner sent this one along. The band included Duke Ellington (p);  George Duvivier (b); Bobby Rosengarden (d,leader); Joe Wilder and Ernie Royal (tp); Boomie Richman (b-cl,ts); Harvey Estrin (lead ...

Backgrounder: Larry Young - Into Somethin', 1964

Larry Young was unlike any organist who preceded him. Rather than channel the Black church, he was more influenced by R&B and John Coltrane's tenor saxophone and chord changes on original pieces. One of Young's best middle-period albums—between his early soul-jazz recordings and his modal, avant-garde LPs—is Into Somethin', his first leadership work for Blue Note. If you listen carefully to Young's organ, you'll hear the Coltrane influence and how modern it sounds for 1964, when it was recorded. Prior ...

All About Jazz is celebrating Lester Young's birthday today!

Lester “Prez" Young was one of the giants of the tenor saxophone. He was the greatest improviser between Coleman Hawkins and Louis Armstrong of the 1920s and Charlie Parker in the 1940s. From the beginning, he set out to be different: He had his own lingo; In the Forties, he grew his hair out. The other tenor players held their saxophones upright in front of them, so Young held his out ...
